Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum. My husband was diagnosed with Huntinghtons about 2 years ago, but on reflection we think he may have had symptoms which we didn't recognise for about 10 years. I am trying to process a lot of grief at losing parts of my partner of 60 years. He has serious mood swings and some memory loss. He is often difficult to deal with if he doesn't agree with what we are doing. eg. a different television program from the one he wanted to watch. He is very old to be still alive with the disease (79) and deliberately does not acknowledge his physical symptoms eg. difficulty in walking and controlling his hand movements. I think he is also grieving but won't admit it.

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to this forum. That's amazing that you have been married for over 60 years. Are you aware of all the services that Huntington's Victoria offer. I would definitely suggest that you check out their website if you haven't done so already. I would also suggest that you have a look at the Power of Sharing Your Story as these are stories from a variety of community members that are sharing their experiences. Please remember that you are not alone and no question is a dumb one.

Take care Inlove

Thank you for the advice and warm welcome. At the moment I'm only coming to this page when I'm overcome by what is happening.

Hello Jenny,

That’s exactly what we hope this forum can be; a space where you feel comfortable leaning on the community whenever you need to. Based on your initial message, I thought you might find one of our podcast episodes helpful. In this episode, we speak with a researcher who has dedicated her career to understanding and supporting carers of individuals with Huntington’s Disease: Understanding Apathy with Dr Sarah Mason

I would love to hear your thoughts if you have a chance to listen, whether there are any takeaways that resonate with you or if it brings up any further reflections or questions.

We are really glad you are here Smile

Hi Jenny, how fabulous that you have been married to your partner for 60 years (that's a great achievement!) I hope you have a great support system around you that you are able to lean on. It's overwhelming for anyone that is going through this . Just know that when you are ready there are people that you can reach out to chat to. Take care of yourself!
